Landon Donovan celebrates his game winning goal against Algeria. Our arrival meant that there were six of us sliding into our seats, waves of anxiety and excitement shivering down our spines. It was almost a matter of pride arriving when the bistro was empty save for a smattering of staff and a handful of bleary-eyed [...] Read more »

Throw It Back

Fenway Park during a night game. When school let out on a game day, there was always a desire to take my allowance for the week and wind my way down to Kenmore Square for a Red Sox game. At only eight dollars, bleacher seats were downright affordable, and those lovable losers, always in the [...] Read more »

Back Row, Left to Right: Stephen Breyer, Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Samuel Alito Front Row: Anthony Kennedy, John Paul Stevens, John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, David Souter (retired) Recently, ESPN’s Lester Munson published an excellent story on, of all things, constitutional law and corporate personhood. The case, which will be heard by the Supreme Court [...] Read more »

Many Faces of Bangkok

While I’d love to dive right into my entry tonight, Matt has told me that some of you have complained to him that there aren’t enough pictures. I’m taking well over 30 a day, so if that’s not enough, either you’re too demanding or you haven’t realized there’s a link beneath the first picture on [...] Read more »

Growing up, I loved Mark McGwire. Of all the players out there, he was the nicest, the humblest, the hardest playing. And he was damn good. For years, he dominated the major leagues. He was on pace to set the single season home run record by nearly 20 in 1993 when the player’s strike ended [...] Read more »

Leaving It On The Floor

I was never much into watching basketball. Why watch a sport I’d rather be playing? Sure, every once in a while I’d break down and catch a few games here or there, but for the most part I didn’t care unless it was the NCAA tournament or playoff basketball. That all changed in high school. Read more »

Giving Your All

Last week, as I played ScrabbleTM against a far superior opponent, she apologized to me. “I’m sorry I didn’t play down to your level,” she said. Needless to say, I was stunned. It didn’t bother me that I was getting trounced nor that I was obviously outmatched. What bothered me was that in previous games, [...] Read more »

The State of Baseball 2007

Before any of you immediately disregard this little essay as another Red Sox fan gloating about winning the 2007 World Series, I’d like to say this actually has little to do with the Red Sox at all. In fact, if I were to say anything about the World Series, it would be an apology offered [...] Read more »

Is Sex Everything?

I just opened the front page of ESPN.com to find out their top story is that Sheryl Swoops is a lesbian. Perhaps I’m insensitive, but I don’t care. Good for her for coming out of the closet. Good for her for attempting to lead the way. Good for her for feeling good about herself. I [...] Read more »

Sorry

Stepping back to baseball for a minute, even though there’s no actual baseball going on, I’d like to touch on the Grady Little issue. As most of you know, the Red Sox lost the ALCS when Pedro Martinez pitched the 8th inning and gave up 3 runs to tie the game. A lot of people [...] Read more »
