Larry of Larry’s Boot Fitting.
“Ma’am, if you’re patient, Larry will see you,” Mike said calmly into the phone, the knuckles gripping the handset white with aggravation.
“Ma’am, please. Larry has a busy day and will be trying to help every–ma’am, if you’d just–” He held the receiver away from his face, took a breath and sighed. [...] Read more »

For the Enjoyment of Others

2 February, 2010 (12:19) | Work | View Comments

“I heard the party was pretty great.”
“Yeah, people seemed to like it,” I replied, my sleep-deprived brain luckily sober enough to conjure up an honest remark.
“Did you have fun?”
“I don’t know.”

It’s almost depressing knowing that any joy I derived from the event came from a combination of the joy of others and the relief that [...] Read more »

Passion, Ignition, Blast Off

“Hipsters generally seem to lack passion,” he explained. “It’s this overriding malaise. They get excited about things, but they just as quickly seem to drop them.”
I thought about it for a second, acknowledging the various hipsters I know and considering my life recently. “I generally [...] Read more »

Circumcisial Evidence

The first week of July boasts a bevy of excellent events. On July 3rd, Wilco plays Red Rocks. On the Fourth of July, I barbecue and release my CD Exchange album. And, perhaps most importantly, on July 2nd, Ignite Boulder 5 comes live to a venue near me.
By the end of Ignite 4, I knew [...] Read more »

A Place to Come Home To

Sunset over the Rocky Mountains.

It was supposed to be like going to camp or to boarding school. I could come back and it would all fall into place with the same scents and comforts and, for the most part, players. But after my freshman year, it wasn’t [...] Read more »

Shaming Myself Through Others

31 March, 2009 (15:48) | Social Commentary | View Comments

The beeping of my alarm is loud enough to be heard in the living room. If my grandfather is awake, as he usually is, he knows what that means.
My computer screen flickers on as soon as I’m able to roll out of bed. It’s not to check email or read the latest news on Slashdot [...] Read more »

No Escape from Paradise

16 March, 2009 (15:13) | Growing Up | View Comments

Nearly a year ago, I went to great lengths to extricate myself from Boulder. I moved out of my house, threw all my things in storage, and went on a grand journey around the world almost exclusively to uproot myself and have a chance to go someplace else. Obviously, the traveling was worthwhile in and [...] Read more »

Parting Gifts

I sip café au lait out of the giant bowl-sized mug, its logo glaring at me, taunting me. It reads “Brookline High School Class of 2000″ on it. I love this mug. It’s all I have to remind me that I graduated.
Well that and this worthless piece of paper they call a diploma.
The symbolism of [...] Read more »

Seeing Red

My heart is racing. It thumps in sync with the seriously cheesy Rammstein music blasting on the stereo. Hey, don’t judge me. It happens to be what keeps me pumped up.
The mask itches. It makes me feel like Ralphie in his bunny suit from A Christmas Story, but I look more like a bank robber. [...] Read more »

Brave New Media

The flashing neon reflects on the street as we pull up. It always does when it’s this cold and every crevice in the road is iced over. I have no worries about that, though. I’ve got media on my mind.

On Wednesday, I stumbled into a strange little event called Ignite Boulder, my never-worn pinstriped suit [...] Read more »
