Last week, I went skiing with my mom. My grandparents have cable at the condo in Frisco where we were staying, so after the first day of skiing, I flopped down on the couch and played channel roulette until I hit CNN. All afternoon I flipped between CNN, MSNBC and CNBC. I’ve never liked news, but I couldn’t stop watching. It’s the new me.
My grandmother sat idly by at the dining room table and my mom knitted quietly beside me. My grandfather was off taking a nap, which is fine with me. He’s a good guy, though I don’t always agree with him. I mean, he at least has reasons for his beliefs.
CNN was playing a story about the “marrying mayor” of San Francisco, who had pushed the city to offer marriage licenses to gay couples. If you haven’t heard about it yet, get out from under your fucking rock and start paying attention. We live in a bigoted nation, and unless the more tolerant of us come out from our holes, the bigots will remain the minority with the active majority.
As the story wrapped up, my grandmother said, “I think they should let gays get married.” I was in shock. I’ve never heard anything so progressive, so right, come out of her mouth. She’s bad mouthed Mexicans for “stealing good American jobs” and black people for “playing their rap music,” so I never expected to hear her come out with an opinion so far to the left.
I guess I spoke too soon.
“I just don’t think they should get any of the benefits. What they do is wrong, and they shouldn’t be able to save money and have kids like the good people. They’re just trying to take away our money.”
Well fuck me. I now officially hate my grandmother. I knew she was uninformed and ignorant, but god damn. At least most of the time she relegates discussion to worthless and unimportant banter about cooking, coupons, and the weather. I want to be able to logically and fairly discuss important issues, but if the republicans I get to talk to are like her, I’m more likely to commit murder or suicide than try and change things.
They say marriage is a tradition that shouldn’t be “tarnished.” I say wasn’t lynching black people a tradition too until we decided it was fundamentally unconstitutional. If you believe that marriage is a sacred bond that shouldn’t be “tarnished,” then make sure not to have any kids, cause any one could be gay. Fuck, now I’m just pissed about that.
For what it’s worth, I support Barney Frank, the Massachusetts Supreme Court and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. There need to be more people willing to make a stand or fight for the right like them.
