Second Circle of Hell on Earth

26 June, 2004 (18:03) | Social Commentary

So Dante outlines his 9 circles of hell, and I think that’s great. It’s tremendously uplifting knowing which level I might be stuck in. In fact, thanks to that, I think I could plan out my vices and aim for a specific circle. But beyond hell, I think there are 9 circles of hell on earth.

  1. Southern California – In So Cal, it’s the lightest circle of hell on earth because of its idyllic weather and beautiful eye candy. Unfortunately, this hotbed of shallowness destroys its own chances of avoiding hell on earth status. And no, the sin has nothing to do with it. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a standard happening everywhere in the world.
  2. Jail – Jail is definitely no fun, but the brevity of the stay makes up for that. No matter where you go, drunk tanks, holding cells, and jails in general offer the second circle of hell on earth due to your loss of rights. In any corner of the world, people in jail become second class citizens.
  3. United States Minimum Security Prison – The third circle of hell on earth is a long term holding facility. With many freedoms in comparison to other prisons, you’re less likely to be raped, killed, or abused in a minimum security prison.
  4. The Catholic Church – With as much child abuse as has been revealed in the last few years, this becomes the fourth circle of hell on earth. The only reasons it isn’t lower are the redeeming value of religious doctrine when taught right and the good people it creates.
  5. Prison – Four words: don’t drop the soap.
  6. Desert Isles – Though it’s rare that anyone reaches this circle of hell on earth, it sits at number six due to the solitude and likelihood that you will die. On the bright side, you may get a lower circle of hell after death.
  7. Siberian Exile – Though existence here can be alright, and the practice hasn’t be sanctioned for years, being exiled to Siberia/Antarctica/the Arctic is the seventh circle of hell on earth. With manual labor, freezing temperatures, and a wasteland to cross to return, such an exile can be demoralizing as well as deadly.
  8. Cambodia – There really isn’t anything wrong with Cambodia… if you don’t count sex slavery, child prostitution, sweat shops, and the abuse of humanity in general. Perhaps, because of my “enlightened” views, I’m being narrow minded and their actions are okay, but until they convince me, this is one step under the worst level of hell on earth.
  9. The Pentagon – This isn’t anything against our current administration, but the pentagon, regardless of who is in charge, is home to arrogance, over-reaching prying, and secretive manipulation of world affairs. To be trapped in there either convicts you of complicity to less than moral activities or implies an ignorance which I can’t stand.

I probably will end up in a few of those circles of hell on earth, but at least I can hope I won’t.

Alex has turned up. He was arrested in California on a misdemeanor charge. Hopefully a week or so in the second circle of hell on earth will knock some sense into him.

  • You forgot Utah. It’s somewhere between 2 and 3, because you can have a short stay or be forced to live here forever against your will and endure massive amounts of torture.

Glad they found Alex. Hope he’s okay.

  • Utah is Purgatory. It’s awful to be there, but it’s easier to get out than any of the other circles.
