We’re Bobbing Along in a Barrel

Welcome to my addiction post. That’s right, I said it. Addiction. You want me to say it again? Fine. Addiction. It’s not that tough. And don’t even think about an intervention. I don’t think I need it. Well, fuck you too. You don’t even know what I’m addicted to. Well, at least you don’t know exactly. Oh, so now you’re curious? Well too bad. I’m not going to tell you. Oh, that’s not fair. You can’t just apologize and make things all better. Oh no. No way. Ok, fine, I’ll tell you, but no making fun of me, ok? Good. You sure you want to know?

Let’s begin with TV. Every once in a while, a show captures my attention, and I mean truly captures it with it’s clever, witty, and well done story-lines, dialog, and design. The last two shows to really capture my attention were Firefly, a sci-fi space western by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (a show I don’t enjoy or watch), and Veritas, a strange conspiracy theory show revolving around Indiana-Jones-like archaeological digs. Unfortunately, Firefly was cancelled after 10 episodes, though the series is now airing its full 13 episode first season on SciFi Channel, and Veritas lasted all of 5 episodes before it was cancelled, though three more episodes were rumored to have aired outside the US. It just goes to show my luck with good TV. Premiering at the same time as Firefly, Fox also featured John Doe, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It lasted nearly a month after the completion of the first season before it was officially announced cancelled.

Therefore, when Tru Calling premiered and was terrible, I was shocked and dismayed to find it’s still on. With the success of Joan of Arcadia, a show my mother loves and which I find demeaning, condescending, and capitalistic on religion, I was supremely doubtful that Fox’s Wonder Falls would be anything but a Joan of Arcadia clone. Amazingly enough, I was wrong. It must be the first time ever.

Not only is Wonder Falls a fantastic show, which I’m addicted to, but apparently it’s been cancelled already. Thank you Fox for fucking up again. Wonder Falls stars the lovely Caroline Dhavernas (Out Cold, Lost and Delirious) as Jaye Tyler, a… fuck, I’m doing a synopsis aren’t I? Well screw that. Watch the show. Look it up. It’s not that hard. It’s a good show. Enough said.

On to addiction number two. As I have been for most of my life, I’m a video game addict. Over spring break, I made the mistake of connecting my Xbox to the Internet to play Amped 2 online. Big mistake. Regardless, that’s not what I’m addicted to. I’m addicted to Zanzarah: The Hidden Portal. I don’t even know if this game is out in the US yet. It’s great. Admittedly, it’s a Pokemon clone.

SIDE NOTE: How do I know it’s a Pokemon clone, you ask? Well, I was once addicted to Pokemon; not the TV show or movies; not the toys and clothing; but the video game. For those of you who don’t know, Pokemon, originally a video game designed by Nintendo for Japanese audiences, was molded after role playing games and aimed at kids. The idea was that as you caught Pokemon, you not only had to collect them to move forward, but you could raise them, evolve them, and fight with them. Basically, it was turn based strategy mixed with virtual pets and slapped into a role playing interface. A brilliantly designed and marketed game that became a worldwide tragedy. The games will always be good, but everything else is evil in its purest form.

In Zanzarah, you collect fairies as an 18 year old girl named Amy and try to save the world of the elves, dwarves, and swamp goblins from the evil shadow elves. Impressively lame plot. Then again, I don’t play games for the plot. If I wanted plot, I’d read a book or watch a movie or even GO GET A LIFE! It’s not that hard, getting a life. The tough part is getting a life with other people who interact with you in the way you want.

  • Ah! I’m dying to see Eternal Sunshine (in my awesome stolen Eternal Sunshine hat!) but it hasn’t come to stupid hometown yet. Crap!
Yeah, I read Wonderfalls was cancelled today. After only four episodes. This is shameful… I watch Joan of Arcadia. Not regularly. And I bitch about how stupid it is once the episode is over. But, yeah. The shame.
I heard they were making a movie out of Firefly. I think I read about it in Entertainment Weekly or something. Didn’t Veritas have the kid from all those Disney channel original series? I hate that kid.

  • They are making a movie out of Firefly. It’s called Serenity. It starts filming this summer.
