Birkenstocks (2000-2004), Size 13, Well Worn in the World, Pass Away

My poor departed Birks...Right and Left Birkenstock died today. Officially. They passed quietly in the night from old age. They were dependable and worn in good stead. The Birkenstocks were a comfortable pair. They fit like an old shoe. And now, they’re gone. They leave behind two feet, aged 23, who loved them. A collection is being taken up called the Birkenstock Fund to try and carry on in their memory. Any and all who wish to donate can send money or well-wishing to their grieving dogs. No formal memorial service will take place. They will be dearly missed.

Now that the obituary has been published, I feel much better. My Birks had started cracking last summer. Early this spring, the suede began to peel back and reveal their worn cork cores. Yesterday, while walking two blocks from the UMC to my car, a torrential downpour soaked them through. Upon waking up this morning, I found that my right sandal had peeled in such a way that the suede in front of the knuckle of the foot had nearly completely peeled away. By the time I got to the radio station, it had come off, leaving the bare cork rubbing against my foot. I then proceeded to peel the suede completely off the right sandal. The left sandal, while still retaining it’s suede cover, is cracking and likely to go any day soon. I actually liked the way the just cork bottom felt, so I may continue to wear them. Of course, if I can convince my parents to buy me new ones (fat chance) when I’m home, I may give them the burial they deserve.

Long Walks in the Rain

I love the rain. I really do. It’s truly amazing; the way it quites the cities; the way it roars through the forests; the way it darkens the skies in the day and brightens them at night. I love the puddles, the wetness, and the solitude of a good rain. I love the stillness when it ends. I love the way the water pours down my face and body. I love the chill that runs down my spine when I wander in the rain. I love the fact it forces me to take off my glasses and blur the world even further. I love the rain.

I revel in the rain. I love walking through the streets and seeing people slouch and huddle up, hiding from the rain, while I stand tall, letting the water wash over me like Lieutenant Dan strapped to the mast. I splash in puddles, hopping and leaping around when no one’s watching until I’m soaked and out of breath. I slide through the mud on playing fields trying to see how far I can go. I watch the lightning crash and the thunder roar around me, brilliantly illuminating everything for an instant before disappearing back into the ground.

But my love for the rain is not unconditional. There are times when I hate the rain too; when it’s pouring down and I have no place to take cover; when the droplets are so cold, I’m iced over in a matter of minutes; when I tried to look nice and the rain ruined my clothes. The rain is like a brother to me; making me strong when I face up to it and weak when I can’t overcome it. When it hit yesterday, it was hard and fast and it beat me into submission. It kept me from swimming in the crisp night air and from even considering hanging out with friends. It forced me inside, where I hid and did nothing. I love the rain, but not when it’s like that; not when it’s a cruel bastard child of nature.

  • your journal is starting to feel more and more like a “ben webzine.” i like it, a lot!

*gives you a black rose in memory of your beloved leftie and rightie.*

i like rain, too, but i personally like watching it from my apartment. we opened the sliding glass door, lit a candle, and watched a movie last night. it was grand. when it rains hard, it makes me want to never leave home. i kind of like how cozy that makes me feel.

you are easily amused, but that’s not a bad thing. *wink*

  • hmm, Ben Webzine… does this demand a name change?

I remember looking back at some of my early entries and thinking how stupid it was to do that little signature thing at the end of my entries. It’s not like poeple wouldn’t know it was me posting, right? And anyway, the topic discussion and stories and the like a so much more fun and interesting to write.

  • Shoes. Sigh..my beloved pair is dying as well. I bought them for an ill-fated blind date three years ago and the guy disappeared but the shoes have not. But I wear them on special occasions, trying to maximize their life.

  • You could always try tracking him down and seeing if he’ll take them back…
