Pent Up Gratitude

Happy Mother's Day

When I was a child, I was too naive to appreciate her youth and vigor. I played with her knowing that she was always willing and able, always ready to go and always there because that’s the way things were.

When I was a teen, I was too self-centered in my own angst to appreciate her sage advice and open ear. I heard her words, often dismissing them as hawkish oversight without acknowledging their wisdom.

When I was in college, I was too busy and distant to appreciate the small gifts of assistance and constant support. My weekly calls home were filled with bon mots of love and pride.

Now that I am an adult, I’ve searched racks of cards for the right way to say thank you to my mother. Ironically, stores no longer sell blank cards, for there are no words to express the gratitude I have.
