News in Brief, Guam Style

Rows of coffin berths lie empty at Guam Veteran’s Cemetery, patiently awaiting their corpses.

Hafa Adai, y’all.

With a whole lot of nothing transpiring the past few days, it’s time once again for news in brief:

  • I’ve watched a ton of movies since I’ve been here. Today alone, I saw the classic Touch of Evil, Get Smart’s Bruce & Lloyd Out of Control (the Get Smart straight-to-DVD spin off), and Keeping Mum. I had hoped to see Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but circumstances conspired to trap me here. Instead, we’ll go Sunday, I hope, unless we cancel as we have with so many things. Other films I’ve seen while traveling: Spiderwick Chronicles, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, 27 Dresses, Persepolis, Hancock, School for Scoundrels, Speed Racer, Iron Man, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Get Smart, Grace is Gone, The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, Jumper, and probably a few others I’m forgetting. We’ve got Big Fish on tap too, which is always nice.
  • I finished reading You Are a Miserable Excuse for a Hero by yesterday, and by finished, I meant I had reached every ending in this hilarious Just Make a Choice! book (Choose Your Own Adventure book for adults). That gets tacked on to Choke by Chuck Palahniuk, Plato and a Platapus Walk into a Bar: Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes by Tom Cathcart and Daniel Klien, and Will to Power by Friedrich Nietzsche. I admit it’s a rather short list for me, but I’ve been avoiding reading by surfing the net heavily and writing a lot. I still have Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay to read, though my copy of Palahniuk’s Invisible Monsters seems to have disappeared (along with a very nice microphone, neither of which have been seen since before my arrival in Guam, making me suspect to luggage tampering). In addition, Nosedive has loaned Palahniuk’s Rant to Denise and me and Denise has handed me Nabokov’s Lolita, Asimov’s Foundation and Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game, none of which I’ve read, embarrassingly enough. I’m trying to track down a copy of Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, but no luck yet (there’s only one bookstore on Guam).
  • We’re supposed to go to a fiesta tomorrow. I have a feeling we won’t make it as we only know what town it’s in and no other details. We also need to get started on paperwork for my pass again. And I need to get my plane ticket back from Guam fixed. And my bank has royally screwed me, so I’m attempting to fix the problem, but they’re giving me shit. I also still need to apply for my Indian Visa, but there’s a major snag thanks to my bank’s screw up. All in all, I’m feeling overwhelmed with things I need to get done and underwhelmed by things to do. Kind of ironic.
  • Denise’s neighbor Destiny went to Bali for a week, so I’m staying at her house to give Anthony and Denise some time to themselves and watch Destiny’s dogs. So far, it’s been rough. There’s not enough room in the bed for me and the dogs and they don’t seem to get that I really just want to sleep at night. On the upside, Sam has gotten used to me pretty quickly, which means he’s not freaking out every time I come in the door.

My quest for sunsets has fallen by the wayside. I’ve not made it out once since Anthony’s return, which is depressing. My inability to drive stick has left me stuck on base with no means to get off when they’re not feeling in the mood. Denise and I did make a half-hearted effort to swing by a few gravyards the other day, but I was running on 2 hours sleep and simply couldn’t hack it for very long.
